Arbor Day . . .
Arbor Day was an important day for the Allen Garden Club when they were founded in 1998. They celebrated the city’s first Arbor Day in February 1999. They also celebrated this special day in 2000. The city gave the club members permission to plant trees in Ford Park as you can see by these two pictures.
The trees were donated by Payless Cashways in 1999 and The Home Depot in 2000.
Since then, the City of Allen hired an Urban Forester who has organized Arbor Day celebrations in really big ways. In 2006 the City of Allen won the National Arbor Day award from the National Arbor Day Foundation and has also received Tree City USA and Tree City Growth awards from the National Forest Service. The Allen Garden Club continues to be a part of this tradition by donating funds for trees to be planted or as in the case of the Liberty Gardens, perennials that filled the garden with red, white and blue flowers. In 2006, the Allen Garden Club donated the tree that was used in the Trees Across Texas Tree Exchange program and also donated money to be used to plant pecan trees in the new pecan orchard in Allen Station Park where Arbor Day was celebrated in 2007. See more pictures below of other Arbor Day Celebrations with the City of Allen.
