Lenten Rose
Hellebores orientalis

This shade loving perennial is native to eastern Europe, specifically Greece and Turkey and starts blooming in early February through March in the North Texas region. It is part of the Ranunculacaea or Buttercup family.
Lenten rose grows best in the shade of trees and should be planted in a raised bed that has been amended with plenty of organic matter.
This plant can grow from 18-24 inches tall and 24-30 inches wide. The leaves are evergreen. It is very hardy and drought tolerant once established. Look for these plants in your local nurseries during February and March.
Lenten Rose can be divide when the clumps get large or look for seedlings that tend to grow around the base of the plant.
